Read more about foods that support bone healthThe Centre for Osteoporosis and Bone Health (COBH) is a Nigerian centre working to improve bone health through prevention, awareness, assessment, professional support, community engagement and research.
The programme is being designed to collect bone-health information in a consistent, structured way, help people understand possible next steps, and build evidence that is relevant to Nigeria. It is part of COBH's research programme.
BHAT, the Bone-Health Assessment Tool, is the questionnaire being developed for the programme. It asks about health, lifestyle and medical history, and ends with a provisional BHAT score from COBH's research scoring model, which uses the established FRAX tool as its scientific reference.
No. BHAT gives a provisional score, but it is not validated for diagnosis or for predicting an individual's fracture risk. Its scoring model is being evaluated for the Nigerian context and will be re-evaluated after the initial three-month research period. The result does not replace professional clinical review.
Osteoporosis is diagnosed by a healthcare professional, usually with a bone density (DEXA) scan.
The assessment is being designed for adults, completing it for themselves or, with permission, for someone else. Final eligibility will be confirmed before it opens to real participants. It is not yet available for children.
No. Completing a questionnaire cannot show whether you have osteoporosis. If you are worried about your bones, please speak to a doctor.
The intended pathway is: a provisional result, explained within the limits of the current model; review or referral by an appropriate professional through the TOCAN network; and, with separate consent, use of de-identified findings to evaluate the model. You see your provisional result at the end of the assessment; the TOCAN review service is being set up.
TOCAN, the Osteoporosis Care Network, is COBH's planned network of professionals, including endocrinology, orthopaedics, women's health, nutrition and nursing, to support bone-health review, referral and follow-up. It is in development.
Schools and communities will be able to work with COBH through Strong Bone, Better Future (SBBF) and the Community Support Programme (CSP). Both are in development, and the way to get involved will be published here.
Professional collaboration will run through TOCAN and the professional workspace, both in development. How to register interest will be published once the arrangements are in place.
The home page does not ask for personal information and sets no cookies. The BHAT assessment asks for separate consent before anything is saved, and keeps contact details apart from assessment answers. The Privacy Notice explains what is collected, why, who can see it, how long it is kept and how to ask for it to be corrected or deleted.
Official contact details are being confirmed and will be published in the Contact section of this page once verified.
